Muniransay Pagoda, located at Hoa Binh Avenue, Can Tho City, was built in 1948 with simple materials. It was not until 1954 that the new gate was built with the architecture of the three treasures tower of Angkor Wat and in 1964 new main hall was built. After a lot of restoration and rebuilding, the pagoda is more beautiful and spacious today.
When arriving at the gate of the pagoda, visitors feel the pagoda stands out with a brilliant yellow on the blue sky. The gate is built in the shape of a three treasures tower standing parallely on the gate, helping visitors feel the earnest of worship place. The three towers are also painted in brilliant yellow. This is a traditional color that is often decorated in Khmer pagodas in the Mekong Delta.
In spite of being located in the heart of the city, the pagoda is quite spacious and peaceful. From the entrance, visitors will see a magnificent yellow tower standing in the middle of the courtyard as a screen covering the main hall area. Each floor in the tower has a small Buddha to demonstrate the devotion of the gentle Khmer people. Around the tower is emblazoned with three treasures, God Keynor and Kurd statues, four-face Buddha statues…
Every year, at Muniransay Pagoda, there are many celebrations such as Cholchonam Thomay - Lunar New Year, Ok-om-Book – worshiping the moon, Donta - worshiping grandparents, Kathina – offering clothes for the monks... The ceremony is solemnly organized with many folk games in various forms.
Muniransay Pagoda is the largest and oldest Khmer pagoda in Can Tho. So, this is a tourist attraction that visitors should not miss whenever they are possible to set foot in Can Tho.
